Tangaroa's son, the eight-armed octopus, was forced afloat by Maui-tikitiki-a-Taranga's fishing in ancient times. In the battle that followed three of its eight arms were severed, and what remains now forms the isle of Te Koura a Maui, Maui's octopus in the common tongue, which is the home to the peoples of the Kraken.

In the centre of the Isle lies the Sacred Mountain of Koura, the head of the octopus, where his three remaining arms meet. Those who know can still hear the breath of the great octopus at this place. Since the beginning of history, the ambassadors of the people from close and far have been meeting at the marae in Koura, to discuss issues that arose between them.
